Police are investigating a serious three-vehicle crash that left one man critically injured and two other people with serious injuries on a major Sunshine Coast road.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the collision, which occurred at Coolum Beach just before 6.50am on Friday.

Initial police inquiries indicate a blue Volkswagen Tiguan was travelling north on the Sunshine Motorway when it entered the southbound lane and struck the side of a grey Subaru Impreza.

The Volkswagen then crashed head-on into a grey Skoda Kodiaq.

The Volkswagen briefly caught fire after the crash, but the blaze had been extinguished by the time police and emergency crews arrived.

The Skoda driver, a 48-year-old Peregian Beach man, suffered critical injuries and was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Police said he remained in a serious but stable condition.

His passenger, a 48-year-old Peregian Beach woman, suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to hospital.

The Volkswagen driver, a 34-year-old Noosa Heads man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

The Subaru driver, a 38-year-old Tewantin man, was assessed by paramedics at the scene and was not physically injured.

The Sunshine Motorway was closed in both directions while investigators examined the scene and reopened about 10.30am.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.
