A hinterland lookout has been transformed with new viewing platforms and facilities for walkers, horse riders and mountain bike riders.
Visitors can now enjoy sweeping views from the platforms at Cootharaba Lookout, after the completion of upgrades to the popular trail destination, formerly known as Shepperson’s Lookout.
The improvements form part of the Noosa Regional Trail Upgrade, a coordinated program of works across the Woondum and Wahpunga trail experiences. The project is supported by $1.6m in funding from the federal government’s Growing Regions Program and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
Noosa Mayor Frank Wilkie said the new platforms improved one of the region’s most popular trail stopping points.
“The new viewing platforms provide an even better opportunity for visitors to stop, take in the spectacular hinterland views and enjoy the natural beauty of the area,” he said.
“These works are part of Council’s broader investment in the Noosa Biosphere Trails network, helping create safer, more enjoyable and sustainable experiences for walkers, horse riders and mountain bike riders while protecting the environmental values that make these places so special.”
A Noosa Council media release stated that the upgrade had transformed Cootharaba Lookout into a more welcoming and functional rest stop, with improvements including new picnic seating, a relocated shade structure, upgraded water facilities, a horse hitching post and new bollards to prevent unauthorised vehicle access.
New retaining walls, seating nooks and wayfinding features have also improved the site’s usability. More than 700 native trees and shrubs were also planted to help integrate the upgrades into the surrounding environment.
The Cootharaba Lookout works are one component of the wider Noosa Regional Trail Upgrade, which includes trail repairs, drainage improvements, upgraded trail nodes, new access controls and improved wayfinding and interpretive signage across the network.
The program is being delivered in accordance with the Noosa Trails Master Plan and reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to a connected, sustainable and accessible trail network for residents and visitors.
