Sunshine Coast locals are being urged to throw on a flanno today as Australians unite to support farmers doing it tough.
Friday, August 14, marks the official Flanno for a Farmer Day, with workplaces, schools, sporting clubs and communities across the country getting involved in the annual fundraising campaign run by Farm Angels.
The charity is encouraging people to donate online, purchase a $2 Flanno for a Farmer token at participating IGA stores or head to Brisbane’s Ekka to help raise funds for farming families.
There is an added incentive for those donating today, with Commonwealth Bank doubling donations made on the official day up to a total of $50,000.
Since the campaign began, Australians have helped Farm Angels raise more than $1.2 million, funding practical assistance including emergency financial relief, food hampers, care packs and mental health and wellbeing support.
Farm Angels CEO Jason Law said putting on a flanno was a simple way for Australians to show farming families they were not facing their challenges alone.
“Farming families are facing enormous challenges right now, and many are carrying those burdens quietly,” Mr Law said.
The campaign comes as many farming families continue to recover from drought, floods, bushfires and other natural disasters while dealing with growing financial pressures.
According to Farm Angels, Australia loses a farmer to suicide every 10 days, highlighting the enormous pressures faced by people working on the land.
IGA is also supporting the campaign through its biggest $2 token drive yet, with almost 700 stores across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT taking part.
“Supporting Flanno for a Farmer is a simple way for us to stand with the hardworking Australians who grow and produce the food we all rely on,” White’s IGA owner Roz White said.
“Through fires, floods and drought, they continue to show extraordinary resilience, working every day to provide fresh food for families across the country. This is one small but powerful way we can show our appreciation and support.
“Every $2 token purchased helps make a meaningful difference to farming families, many of whom live in rural and isolated communities, far from support services.”
Farm Angels was established in Queensland in 2014 and has since expanded its support to primary producers across Australia, assisting communities affected by drought, floods, fires and other natural disasters.
In 2025, the organisation raised $627,000 for farmers and their families and spent 3,755 hours providing mental health and wellbeing support calls.
