More than 7100 homes have been unlocked across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions through more than $125 million in state government investment for essential infrastructure.

The investment, delivered through the Residential Activation Fund, is aimed at providing infrastructure such as roads, water, sewerage and power to make land ready for residential development.

The announcement comes as the state government says the fund has helped unlock more than 100,000 homes across Queensland since it was launched less than 18 months ago.

The RAF initiative is a key part of the Securing Our Housing Foundations Plan to deliver a million new homes by 2044.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said the government was commitment to helping to provide homes.

“For too long, the dream of having a place of your own was denied to too many Queenslanders across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions,” he said.

“More than 7100 homes have already been unlocked across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions and watch this space for more.”

He said the state government was committed to breaking “down barriers that have been holding back councils and the industry, and in turn the keys to Queenslanders’ front doors”.

“Availability equals affordability and, by ensuring supply is unlocked, while also delivering a record number of social and affordable homes and support for first homebuyers, we’re delivering a place to call home for more Queenslanders.”

Sunshine Coast News has asked the state government where in the region the 7100 homes could be and is awaiting a response.

But more than $82 million will go towards critical infrastructure in the east of the evolving Maroochydore City Centre, paving the way for apartments and improved road connections.

It’s set to accelerate residential development for more than 1800 apartments, and the project scope includes the extension of First Avenue to Dalton Drive, as well as an upgrade to a section of Maud Street.

More than $4m is also going towards a site at Noosa.
