Upgraded facilities at a popular recreation venue have been completed as part of preparations for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The new amenities at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct at Currimundi were officially unveiled today and include an accessible gym, athlete recovery spaces, office facilities and an additional emergency access road.
Work on a coastal walkway project at the Currimundi venue is expected to be completed in the second half of the year.
The improvements form part of a state-wide $64.2 million program to upgrade state-owned sport and recreation venues ahead of the Games.
The state government said the upgrades were intended to encourage greater participation in sport and provide improved support for athletes progressing through performance pathways to elite competition.
The precinct welcomed nearly 93,000 visitors over the past 12 months, including school, sporting and community groups.
Deputy Premier and Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie said the upgrades would form part of the region’s long-term sporting infrastructure.
“We’re just over six years away from hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and we’re delivering the generational sporting infrastructure to support current and future athletes, creating opportunities for local communities and leaving a lasting legacy long after the final whistle is blown,” Mr Bleijie said.
“The Sunshine Coast is at the heart of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games preparations, and the Crisafulli Government is delivering the infrastructure our region needs not just for the Games, but for decades beyond.
“From the new Sunshine Coast Stadium to the Athletes Village, we are investing in the facilities that will support local communities, attract major events, create jobs and help grow our region long after 2032.
“These projects are about creating opportunities for local athletes to train and compete closer to home, giving community sporting clubs access to world-class facilities and ensuring the Sunshine Coast leaves a legacy from the Games.”

Acting Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Andrew Powell said the upgraded facilities would help meet growing demand.
“Our Queensland sport venues are well-loved by their communities, welcoming hundreds of thousands of people every year and supporting school, sport and community groups,” Mr Powell said.
“These improvements at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct will help the venue to meet growing demand, welcome more community members and support the next generation of sporting talent.”
