A young man has been taken to hospital after a near-drowning at a popular Sunshine Coast beach.

Emergency services were called to Melrose Parade at Maroochydore Beach at 12.37pm this afternoon following reports of a post-immersion incident in the surf.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed a man in his late 20s was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition with spinal injuries.

Sunshine Coast chief lifeguard Trent Robinson said lifeguards provided first aid to the man.

“It seems like it’s a spinal injury at this stage,” he said.

“Lifeguards actually did do CPR on him as well, and he did actually start breathing on his own again and he was transported to hospital.”

Mr Robinson said conditions along the coast currently required extra caution from beachgoers.

“During the low tide with the swell still around, it is quite shallow on all the sand banks on the Sunshine Coast, especially in Mooloolaba and Noosa,” he said.

“So, we’re asking all swimmers to please show a bit of caution at that low tide mark, or just with those dumping waves at all times.

“And that’s the same as board riders; we’re just pleading with the public to please show a bit of caution with these conditions.”
