Police will undertake a key training exercise in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, to prepare for emergency situations.

Sunshine Coast District Officer Superintendent Craig Hawkins advised visitors to Maroochydore not to be concerned by the presence and activities of officers on Wednesday afternoon and night.

“I want to make sure that people aren’t alarmed,” he said.

“It’s likely to see a high number of police in and around Maroochydore precinct itself and I just want to reinforce with the community that it is a police exercise.

“There is likely to be additional noises: loud bangs and other unusual sounds in and around that location, but I reiterate there’s nothing to be concerned about.

“It’s very much about making sure the police are well prepared and able to respond to a critical incident exercise.”

He provided limited details on the training, which he said was “not uncommon”.

“It’s about responding to a critical incident, to ensure the police are well prepared and certainly ready for an event that might occur, and certainly being able to test our police’s ability to respond,” he said.

“The police themselves don’t know what’s going to be involved, so it’s very much about making sure that we do have the ability to respond.

“There will be police cars in and around the location but they won’t be necessarily using the roadways.

“We have partner agencies involved and watching what is being done, because in any incident where police are involved there are other emergency services that also are involved.”
