The state’s top surf lifesavers will return to the Sunshine Coast next year, with Maroochydore named host of the 2026 Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) has confirmed the Youth State Championships will be held from February 16–22, followed by the Senior and Masters titles from February 27–March 1, with support from Sunshine Coast Council.

The championships are the pinnacle of Queensland’s surf sports calendar, attracting thousands of athletes, officials and spectators from across the state.

SLSQ CEO Dave Whimpey said the organisation was excited to bring the event back after the 2025 championships were cancelled due to Cyclone Alfred.

“The Queensland State Championships have such a rich history, and we’re thrilled to bring the event back to Maroochydore in 2026,” he said.

“The Sunshine Coast has always been an outstanding host, and with strong local support we’re confident the event will see more of the atmosphere we experienced in 2023 with thousands travelling to the event from all across the state.”

In 2023, more than 3,200 athletes took part across the senior and youth divisions at Mooloolaba, with more than 2,000 competitors travelling from outside the Sunshine Coast region – a major boost for the local tourism economy.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the championships would showcase surf sports at their best and deliver benefits for local businesses.

“This is a win-win for our region as locals will get to see the best in action on our beautiful Maroochydore Beach, and businesses will benefit from the influx of visitors during February, which is traditionally a little quieter,” Mayor Natoli said.

“We know the Sunshine Coast is the host with the most when it comes to elite sporting events, and this is another great opportunity for us to shine.”

The championships will feature a full range of surf sports, from beach sprints and surf races to relays, lifesaving competition and team events.
