A military device found on a Sunshine Coast beach has been safely detonated, with police revoking an emergency declaration after deeming the area safe.
An emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act was enforced at Peregian Beach at about midday on Friday, after the discovery of a ‘suspicious device’.
Several streets were shut down before a specialist team disposed of the item: a military flare.
The emergency declaration was revoked at about 3pm.
Police issued a media release stating that “the device has been safely detonated and there is no treat to community safety”.
“Police thank the public for their co-operation.”
It’s not known how the military flare came to the beach. It was spotted by a member of the public, who notified Noosa Council, who informed police.
The exclusion zone had encompassed David Low Way from Podargus Parade to Woodland Drive, and including Martin St, Avocet St, Peregian Esp, Parakeet Cres, Egrer St, Teal St, Currawong Cres, Osprey Ave, Tern St, Garnet St, Ibis St, Pelican St, and Kingfisher Drive.
Specialist police attended, residents were advised to stay indoors and members of the public were advised to avoid the area for about three hours, before police gave the all clear.
