A Sunshine Coast construction group is marking a significant milestone in its history of creating homes and communities.

Murphy Group is celebrating 50 years since Leigh Murphy began the company at Mooloolaba in 1975.

What started as a small family business has since grown into a multi-division group employing more than 90 professionals across Murphy Builders, Murphy Homes and MP Build.

In that time, the team has played a significant role in commercial construction, industrial superstructures, government projects, multi-residential developments and luxury family homes.

Murphy Group projects have spanned from Kakadu to Sydney, with a focus on building legacies as well as structures.

In the early days, Mr Murphy would supplement his income selling pot plants at the Caloundra flea market every weekend while he established a strong reputation that led him from renovations to building bespoke spec homes.

He initially focused on residential construction, building house and land packages and shaping many Sunshine Coast residential estates.

By the late 1980s, Mr Murphy’s work became integral to developments at Kawana and Mount Coolum, while the 1990s saw the company expand into commercial construction with the completion of projects including the Maleny Wine Barrel and the Mooloolaba Seashells Units.

The 2000s ushered in a period of expansion and strategic corporate restructuring, with Mr Murphy’s daughter Brooke Bastien and experienced carpenter Mark Berry, who has been with Murphy Group for 27 years, joining the board.

During the Global Financial Crisis and into the 2010s, Murphy Builders diversified further, establishing three core business units of commercial construction, investment housing and high-end custom homes, as well as expanding to interstate construction.

Ms Bastien said Murphy Group’s commitment to growth and contributing to the community remained steadfast and the company was proud to mark the milestone.

“As Sunshine Coast locals, we are deeply committed to building quality within our community,” she said.

“We need to say a heartfelt thanks to the Sunshine Coast community for their ongoing support and trust.”

“This 50-year milestone is a testament to Aussie grit and determination.

“We wouldn’t be here today without the ongoing dedication from our incredible team and the strong partnerships we have forged over the years.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our founder, Leigh, whose commitment to excellence is the reason for our success.”

Ms Bastien said Murphy Group was involved in significant community projects, including the sponsorship of local sporting clubs and teams, and being the major sponsor of the iconic Murphy Homes Maroochy Surf Classic.

“The company actively partners with local charities, including the Daniel Morcombe Foundation,” she said.

“In addition to building the foundation’s headquarters in Palmwoods, we’ve just announced a second ‘Build It For The Kids’ charity home initiative, with all auction profits going to the Foundation’s mission of keeping kids safe.”

Inspired by his vision, Mr Murphy said Murphy Group remained focused on delivering projects and building relationships.

“We will continue to keep our fundamental values and our great team; it is not that the sky’s the limit, there is in fact no sky,” he said.
