Several of the Sunshine Coast’s main roads will be closed for an annual event that will attract about 5000 competitors this weekend.

Key routes including sections of the Sunshine Motorway, Mooloolaba Esplanade, Buderim Avenue, Alexandra Parade and Parkyn Parade will be inaccessible to motorists during the Mooloolaba Triathlon festival.

Delays are expected on thoroughfares including David Low Way, Beach Road and Bradman Avenue.

This year’s event was expected to be held on March 8 and 9 but it was postponed amid the threat of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The festival will include multiple events including the triathlon, sprint triathlon, a teams triathlon and aqua bike race.

Roads in red will be closed and roads in yellow will have delays.

Mooloolaba Triathlon regional director Leanna Ali was delighted the festival was set to go ahead, with an additional event.

“After a false start earlier in the month we can’t wait to have thousands of athletes join us this weekend for the Mooloolaba Triathlon, along with some extra star power with the Oceania Triathlon Sprint Championships now on the schedule,” she said.

“We look forward to welcoming athletes of all ages and abilities to Mooloolaba, from those taking part in their first triathlon right up to those set to challenge for an Oceania title on Sunday morning.”

The motorway will be closed southbound from Coolum to Mooloolaba and northbound from Pacific Paradise to Coolum from 5am to 11.15am.

The Mooloolaba Triathlon is supported by the state government through Tourism and Events Queensland and through Sunshine Coast Council’s Major Events Sponsorship program.

It will be the 33rd running of the event, which injects more than $8.5 million into the local economy.
