A teenage girl has reportedly died following a shark attack at Bribie Island.

The Queensland Ambulance Service was called about 4.45pm on Monday to attend to a teenager who had been swimming off Woorim, on the surf side of the island.

Warning: some readers may find the photo below confronting.

She was treated on the beach, north of the surf club near Fourth Avenue.

The teen suffered life threatening injuries to the upper body, which she succumbed to just after 5pm.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

A witness, John Wadey, had just been swimming at the beach with his 11-year-old son when the victim was brought to shore.

“Police were there and we were about to go in (for her) and then the two police ran in and they brought her in,” he said.

Mr Wadey said there were sharks at the beach “all the time” and people were used to seeing them some days but not others.

“It’s a risk you take,” he said.

Surf Life Saving Queensland issued a statement confirming that a female swimmer was fatally attacked by a shark in an unpatrolled area at Woorim Beach.

“SLSQ is currently supporting emergency services with the situation and will advise further information when appropriate.”

“Woorim Beach will remain closed until further notice,” the statement said.
