A community organisation that provides food relief and a mentoring program for kids will be bolstered by $20,000 grants.

The volunteer-run Urban Angels Community Kitchen, which is a unit of the Integrated Family and Youth Service, will create a ready stock of more tasty and nutritious frozen meals because of funding from CommBank.

Meanwhile, volunteer mentoring program Connect Kids will be able to provide more support to kids who need it.

IFYS managing director Tony Pignata said the money would make a significant impact.

“This generous support allows us to expand our reach, delivering even more nourishing, home-cooked meals to those experiencing food insecurity from the Sunshine Coast to Gympie,” he said.

“Every month, our dedicated team and volunteers produce around 15,000 meals for people in need.

Some of the meals prepared by Urban Angels.

“However, the rising cost of food has made it challenging to keep up with the increasing demand.

“This funding from CommBank comes at a crucial time and will have a profound impact, not just on our organisation but on the lives of those we serve.

“For many in our community, a warm meal represents far more than sustenance: it’s a source of comfort, dignity, and a reminder that they are not forgotten.”

Connect Kids will also receive a $20,000 grant from CommBank.

CEO Sonja Michels said funding help was required.

“The $20,000 makes a real difference in our ability to support young people in need of mentorship,” she said.

“As a fully self-funded organisation, we rely on support from our community to keep delivering on our mission to break the cycle of disadvantage in our community.

“Right now, we have over 90 children waiting to be matched with a mentor.

“These funds will allow us to engage with more local businesses and employers, encourage more volunteers and ultimately recruit more mentors to guide and support vulnerable children.

“With this grant, Connect Kids will be able to provide up to five months of intensive support to as many as 30 to 40 children, offering them the stability, encouragement, and positive role models they need to break free from the cycle of disadvantage.

“The journey to becoming a mentor with Connect Kids is thorough and thoughtful, ensuring each volunteer is ready to be a stable, positive influence in a young person’s life.”

The groups are among 32 organisations in Queensland and 175 organisations nationally to receive $20,000 thanks to the CommBank Staff Foundation’s Community Grants program.
