There will be changed traffic conditions at many of the region’s main thoroughfares this weekend, when 1600 people will compete in a scenic 113km race.

A section of the Sunshine Motorway and key roads at Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore and Buderim will be closed for Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast.

Athletes from around the world will compete in the event, which will consist of a 1.9km swim at Mooloolaba Beach, a 90km ride taking in the motorway and a 21.1km run finishing at Mooloolaba Esplanade. It’s expected to take the winners about 3h40min to complete.

Ironman Group Oceania regional director Leanna Ali said the event held plenty of appeal.

“Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast is a popular event for athletes from home and abroad, and we look forward to seeing more than 1600 out on course this Sunday,” she said.

“The Sunshine Coast is the perfect setting for an event like this and we’re thrilled to be bringing athletes back to the region for the 11th running of Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast.

“We’re also set to welcome some of the top professional athletes in the region back to the Sunshine Coast with an incredibly strong men’s and women’s field which is sure to result in exciting racing.

“We also have an IronKids event taking place on Saturday meaning that there are plenty of opportunities for the whole family to be involved in Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast.”

Sunshine Coast mayor Rosanna Natoli said the event was a boon for the region.

“By supporting one of Australia’s largest and most successful Ironman 70.3 events since 2013, the Sunshine Coast has received a significant boost to our local economy and reputation as a world-class destination,” she said.

“Our region has long celebrated endurance sport as an important part of our healthy and enviable lifestyle, and we wish all competitors, including the IronKids, the very best.”

Sunshine Coast Council supports Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast through its Major Events Sponsorship Program. The event is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.

An area at the Mooloolaba State School will offer free and secure bike and scooter parking.

A free shuttle bus service will be available from Mountain Creek State High School, Lady Musgrave Drive and River Esplanade bus stop on Saturday and Sunday.
