A Sunshine Coast police officer has been hailed for her dedication and unwavering spirit.

Sergeant Yvette Tarrier was nominated for a QBANK Everyday Hero Award, for her efforts to engage with the community and prevent criminal activity.

Ms Tarrier has 20 years of experience in the Queensland Police since transferring from New South Wales, and in her current role with the Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Unit she coordinates a range of crime prevention and community engagement activities to make her community safer.

She was nominated for the awards by a police volunteer she works with, and she said it was an honour to be recognised.

“I enjoy my work and feel lucky that my role includes working with people who feel I deserve this award and nominated me,” she said.

“It is nice to be recognised through this nomination and to realise that I have made a difference to someone in my role.”

Ms Tarrier said engaging with the community and making their interaction with police a positive experience was a rewarding part of her role.

“I work closely with local Neighbourhood Watch groups and Crime Stoppers to support them carry out their role and educate and inform the community about crime prevention measures,” she said.

“This role also involves supporting our Volunteers in Policing and Neighbourhood Watch groups members and providing them with training and support to carry out their role.”

Ms Tarrier said the community was heavily invested in community safety.

“My role in crime prevention means that I have a strong role to play in community engagement,” she said.

“The Sunshine Coast community is friendly and very supportive of the work police do.”

Now in their ninth year, the awards celebrate the exceptional achievements of people within Queensland police, fire, health, corrections, justice and the public service, including educators.

The six award categories are Achievement, Ownership, Dedication, Working Together, Excellence and the Young Everyday Hero Award.

Winners will be selected by a panel of respected judges and will receive $2000 deposited into a QBANK account and $2000 donated to a charity of their choice.

Finalists will be announced in September and winners will be recognised at the annual awards dinner at the W Hotel Brisbane on October 27.
