Drag shows and burlesque performances will be just part of the revelry at a vibrant festival that celebrates diversity of race, sexualities and gender identities.
Thousands of people are set to converge on the Banana Bender Pub at Palmview, to enjoy the third annual Sunshine Coast Mardi Gras on Saturday, June 10.
“We are all about fun and inclusion so there’s no better location to host the festivities,” pub manager Shannon Fay said.
“This is always a vibrant festival with thousands of people joining in the celebrations and enjoying the fun-tastic entertainment by some of the Coast’s best performers.”
A family-friendly event will be held at Aussie World between 5pm and 8.30pm, with the adults-only entertainment kicking off from 8.30pm until midnight.
Hosts Miss Lady Saint Diva, Miss Synthetique, Shanny T Bone and Gayleen Tuckwood will keep the entertainment rolling throughout the evening with a line-up of acts including drag queens, singers and a marching band.
There will be 45 performers at the event, including headline act DJ Kitty Glitter.
“Every year we keep growing and the community support is always so amazing,” Ms Fay said.
There will be local market stalls and a full range of activities for all ages.
The event line-up will also include drag shows, free face painting, drag story time with Lady Sass and Moose, comedy shows, DJ Beverly Thrills, burlesque performances and a Party Central Stage with the amazing talents of Andrea Kirwin and Claire Evelynn, Solar Duo, Jasmin Jackson and Nyssa Ryan.
Sunshine Coast Council is among local groups getting behind the event.
CEO Emma Thomas said council was committed to being a respectful and inclusive employer and champion of diversity and inclusivity.
“Council employees launched an internal Pride Network on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia in May, to show support to staff,” she said.
Representatives from council’s Pride Network and allies will be at the Mardi Gras “sharing information about the benefits of a career with council and supporting diversity and inclusion in the region”.
“If you’re attending the Mardi Gras event, be sure to see our council team,” Ms Thomas said.
“Our amazing people create long-lasting positive impact for our community. If you want to shape the region for the future, join the team. You’ll be respected here at council and your difference will be valued.”
Aussie World and the Banana Bender Pub have hosted the Sunshine Coast’s own Mardi Gras celebration since the inaugural event in 2020.
Tickets start from $12 or guests can upgrade their ticket for $35 to include four hours of even more FUN on Aussie World’s ride and attractions between 5pm and 8.30pm.
