Pedestrian safety improvements are being designed for a busy road in a popular area for both locals and tourists.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads is planning the upgrade of the intersection of David Low Way and Scrub Road in Coolum Beach.
The proposed design includes a new pedestrian refuge island on David Low Way, new street lighting and a new dedicated right-turn lane into Scrub Road.
“Road safety is a top priority of the Palaszczuk Government, that’s why we’re investing heavily into roads and intersections across the state,” Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said.
“We know this is a busy road in a popular area for both locals and tourists.
“To keep them safe, we’re upgrading the pedestrian crossing with a new refuge island and increasing lighting.”
There are currently no nearby crossing facilities to allow people to safely cross the road and access bus stops.
The proposed design features a pedestrian refuge island and a dedicated, right-turn lane into Scrub Road for vehicles travelling southbound on David Low Way, allowing them to stop and wait for a safe gap in traffic before turning.
The $1 million project is funded by the state government’s Targeted Road Safety Program, which aims to address known and potential crash locations using high-benefit, cost-effective safety treatments.
