An unusual real estate opportunity is up for grabs in the form of a 95-year-old Noosa hinterland building with a holy history.

The old church, which sits on a 1384sqm block and was one of oldest churches in Noosa Shire, is a blank canvas for prospective buyers – but it comes with a catch.

After its closure in June 2021, the former St Luke’s Anglican Church at Kin Kin has seen strong interest since going on the market.

However, the deconsecrated building at 3 Grady Street is zoned as a community facility, meaning its next owner would need to use the building in line with that designation.

Anyone wanting to transform the building into a home or other venture would need to apply for a change of use with Noosa Council.

The church is listed for $544,500 with Phil Hargrave at Ray White Pomona Hinterland.

The property initially hit the market in December 2022 as expressions of interest, but a price was attached to the sale in March.

Sunshine Coast News understands church authorities had hoped to find a tenant to lease the empty premises, but after a year with no success a decision was made to put it up for sale.

“We’ve had lots of interest,” Mr Hargrave said.

“The church is a great building – it has great acoustics and an area off to the side where there is a meeting room, a kitchenette and a couple of toilets.

“It’s a great opportunity for somebody that does community work.

“I’ve had people of late coming to me who do self-awareness or are wanting to help the community (interested in the space).”

The church sits on a 1384sqm block of land.

Mr Hargrave said he had also fielded several inquiries from people wanting to turn the church into a home.

However, Sunshine Coast News understands Noosa Council would like to see the building remain as a community facility.

Noosa Council has been contacted for comment.

The St Luke’s Anglican Church was opened and dedicated on November 19, 1926, by Archbishop Gerald Sharp.

It was extensively damaged by a storm in 1985 but then rebuilt. The church then closed on June 19, 2021, and was deconsecrated by Bishop Jeremy Greaves.

It was the last church in Kin Kin following the closure of St Mary’s Catholic Church after it was also destroyed in the 1985 storm.
