Some bumper-to-bumper sections on the Sunshine Coast Motorway are about to be resurfaced.

Four kilometres of the Sunshine Motorway eastbound and westbound lanes, between Sippy Downs and Mountain Creek, are set for an $8.5m upgrade.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said drivers could expect safer driving conditions.

“The programmed resurfacing of key arterial roads like the Sunshine Motorway is important for extending the road’s life and ensuring a safer journey for motorists,” he said.

“The Sunshine Coast population is forecast to experience significant growth over the next 10 years – growth we need to cater for with smart planning now.

“In the past two years, the Palaszczuk Labor Government has delivered out about 26km of resurfacing along the Sunshine Motorway, totalling about $23 million.”

Minister Bailey said the motorway was a “key connector”.

“It is an important part of the state-controlled network and the new surface will be welcomed by the 45,000 motorists who travel this section each day.”

Resurfacing was set to start in November and will take about six weeks to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting.

In an effort to reduce impacts to nearby businesses, residents and motorists, all works would be carried out at night, with occasional weekend work if required.

“As part of this project, we will resurface the on and off-ramps on both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the motorway and detours will be in place for this work,” Minister Bailey said.

“I appreciate the patience of local residents and drivers as we deliver this important work.”

Motorists can expect impacts to travel times when lane closures and detours are implemented.

Reduced speed limits, roadworks signs and variable message signs will in place to advise of the changed traffic conditions and to ensure motorist and road worker safety
