The inspiration behind the Sunshine Coast City Hall’s design has been revealed as the landmark building takes shape in the new CBD.

The similarity to the hinterland’s majestic Glass House Mountains is becoming evident as the impressive building emerges in Maroochydore’s blossoming city centre.

The photos above and just below represent the first time we’ve seen the near-completed structure. It will boast 10 storeys, about 12,000sqm of floor space, a 156-space car park and 96 bicycle spaces.

The building, on the corner of First Avenue and South Sea Islander Way, will represent the region’s people, our culture, and our natural elements.

It will include retail and community spaces, as well as office accommodation for council staff.

The towering city hall makes its presence felt in the new CBD.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said Maroochydore City Centre’s feature building had reached an important milestone, with the tower crane dismantled and all external scaffolding scheduled to be removed in coming days.

“The similarities to the Glass House Mountains can now be seen in the architects’ use of the mountains’ forms and colours, the stepped roof and curved facade and the tower of native species gradually being planted,” he said.

“And, in a further nod to nature, residents, visitors and staff will experience the mountain and water themes as they flow from the exterior inwards.

“I encourage our community to take a look at council’s new video, which reveals how the Glasshouse Mountains inspired our city hall’s design.”

Mayor Jamieson said there was still plenty of work to do.

“This includes public art and landscaping, which will create attractive spaces linking the city hall building with its surroundings in Australia’s newest CBD,” he said.

Other works on the external façade and ground level streetscape were progressing at a rapid pace.

Fit-out on a number of floors will be completed in coming weeks, ready for furniture, audio visual and IT equipment installation in the coming months.

The city hall towers over surrounding streets in Maroochydore.

Sunshine Coast City Hall is expected to open later this year.
