A new cancer centre will open in Noosa to deliver high-quality care and radiation therapy for local cancer patients.
Cancer and cardiac care service provider GenesisCare announced on Wednesday it will bolster its commitment to cancer care in the region, with the development of the centre by the end of the year.
The centre will be situated in the Noosa Health Precinct, just footsteps from the Noosa Hospital.
GenesisCare radiation oncologist and chief medical officer of Oncology Australia Dr Marie Burke said it would complement existing GenesisCare centres on the Sunshine Coast.
“With the ability to care for more than 500 patients each year, the new Noosaville cancer centre will offer local patients access to high-quality cancer services, advanced technology, precision medicine and clinical trials,” she said.
“The centre will integrate with existing radiology, pathology and pharmacy services onsite, and will work in partnership with the Noosa Hospital services across surgery, medical oncology and haematology.”
GenesisCare has been providing high-quality oncology services to Queenslanders for more than 30 years.
The end-of-year opening of the Noosaville centre will mark the next chapter in GenesisCare’s history of cancer care for patients on the Sunshine Coast, having opened its first centre in Nambour in 2001 and its oncology and radiation therapy centre in Buderim in 2019.
GenesisCare’s planned expansion is designed to cater to the demographics of the fast-growing region.
The Noosa and Noosa hinterland cancer incidence is above the Queensland average (100 more cases per 100,000 people).
GenesisCare radiation oncologist Dr Debra Furniss has been consulting in the Sunshine Coast for almost a decade, with many of her patients residents of the Noosa region.
“With the opening of the GenesisCare Noosaville centre later this year, local patients will be able to receive both consultations and treatment locally,” she said.
“Being diagnosed and treated for cancer is a stressful time. Knowing that high-quality care is available close to home is a big relief for the patient and their loved ones.”
Deborah Coakley, the executive general manager of funds management at property specialist Dexus, which manages the health precinct, said: “We are excited to welcome GenesisCare to the Noosaville medical precinct.
“We are working closely with GenesisCare to deliver vital healthcare infrastructure, enabling them to offer high-quality care to the local Noosa and Sunshine Coast communities.”
The multimillion-dollar facility will repurpose an existing building. Dexus is currently in the process of appointing a contractor.
