A young entrepreneur has released a line of quirky gym towels that he hopes will encourage more people to address their physical and mental health.

Matt Travers, director of Maroochydore-based digital marketing agency, Sunny Digital, launched Gym Beast gym towels, with the hope that the eye-catching apparel might spark a conversation around mental health, while raising much needed funds for the Black Dog Institute.

“I noticed at the gym I go to that most of the towels were a bit bland and not fit for purpose,” he said.

“Most are old bath towels and even the brand name sports versions are a little too corporate so I saw a gap in the market where I could create my own and support a worthy cause which is close to my heart.

“We’ve been through a lot over the past two years with Covid restrictions and the festive season is a time where people struggle through anxiety, isolation and loneliness.

“If I can get just one person who is struggling with their mental health to get more active, then I have done my job as the link between mental and physical fitness is undeniable.

“Twenty per cent from the profit of each sale will be going to the Black Dog Institute and I am really committed to support this worthy cause.”

According to the Black Dog Institute, suicide was the leading cause of death for Australians between 15 and 44 years of age and a sense of purpose proved to help reduce suicidal behaviour.

Government website healthdirect said that participating in regular physical exercise released endorphins and serotonin that improved mood and could help to reduce the symptoms of stress and mental health conditions such as depression.

Matt, who was a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Business Awards and the Mumbrella Under-30 Achiever of the Year award, said the range of towels included 10 unique designs.

They’re made from a premium microfibre waffle, which are non-slip, antibacterial, odour-free and are the perfect size to pack in a sports bag.

“The towels are all my designs and the most popular to date include the Luxe, Avocardio, Vitamin Beast and Extra Fries designs,” he said.

“I hope they put a smile on people’s faces while they are working out and supporting the amazing work of the Black Dog Institute.”
