If you were lucky enough to receive a Personal Mobility Device for Christmas, like an electric scooter, then it is important to note there are a number of road rules that relate to their use.

This is particularly important to avoid potentially dangerous interactions with walkers and cyclists.

Criteria for a rideable or PMD

  • It must be within the dimensions of 1250mm in length by 700mm in width by 1350mm or 700mm in length by 1250mm in width by 1350mm in height.
  • It must have a maximum speed of 25km/hr.
  • It must weigh no more than 60kg (without a rider).
  • It must be powered by a motor.
  • It must have one or more wheels.
  • It must have a braking system.
  • It must have no sharp protrusions.

Rules when using ride-ables

  • The rider must be at least 16 years of age, or 12 with adult supervision.
  • The rider must wear an approved bicycle helmet that is securely fitted at all times.
  • The rider must not carry passengers.
  • The rider must not use a mobile device.
  • The rider must not drink and ride.
  • The rider must have a working flashing or steady white light on the front, and a red light and reflector at the rear when travelling at night or in hazardous conditions.
  • The rider must keep left and give way to pedestrians.
  • The rider must travel at a speed that allows him/her to stop safely to avoid colliding with a pedestrian.
  • The rider must travel at a safe distance from a pedestrian so you can avoid a collision.
  • The rider must keep left of oncoming bicycles and other personal mobility devices.
  • The rider must only use the bicycle side of a shared path.

For everyone’s safety, ride in a safe and respectful manner, especially around pedestrians.
