The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service has celebrated its large and willing crew of registered volunteers, known as ‘Sunshiners’.

The service recognised its almost-150 strong volunteers, to coincide with International Volunteers Day on December 5.Maleny local and SCHHS volunteer for the past five years, Colleen, said she loved helping people and that being able to be a friendly face and support person at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, brought her great joy. “I volunteer twice a week, on Wednesdays with the Paediatrics Unit, where we take the little ones into theatre, and take care of them and their parents, and on Thursdays as a Justice of the Peace,” she said.“Prior to COVID-19, I was also rostered on to clinics around the hospital and helped patients find their way.“They come in here and they’re sick and lost and I suppose I have that sign on my forehead that says ‘help’.“I go and ask them where they want to go, and they’re very thankful that we can do that for them. I just love helping people. I love their smiling faces and I love their thank you. When I see and hear that I know I’ve achieved something.“They’re also so appreciative of this place (SCUH).“When I moved up from Brisbane to Maleny, I wanted to give back to the community. I’ve worked in hospitals all my life, in various admin roles, including as a Patient Transport Officer, in Mental Health and Paediatrics. I think health is in the blood, so it’s where I stayed.

“I also love sewing, it’s one of my hobbies, and a few years ago I made a whole heap of nice, bright gowns for the kids for when they go into theatre. It was beautiful, to see the kids in them, it brings me joy.“Volunteers provide such a valuable service to the community. If you’ve got a caring personality, you love to help people and you think you can do it, give it a go. It’s enjoyable and you see the joy on a lot of people’s faces.
