It may look like a wacky concrete pool under construction.
But this is the first look at the new Dicky Beach skate park progress, after work began in March.
As the skateboarding street and park global champions kick off the Tokyo Olympics, construction is well under way on the new precision-built, free public leisure space.
Skaters, BMXers and scooter riders are expected to be fine-tuning their tricks on the concrete playscape in September.
Once completed, the area also will boast new and improved:
- public amenities building
- picnic shelter
- pathways
- beach shower
- park lighting and electrical infrastructure
- disability parking space
- furniture such as seating, drinking fountain, bike parking and bins
- landscaping
The SS Dicky propeller feature also will be reinstated.
Sunshine Coast Council Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg said the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan Stage 1 works would provide a welcoming space and experience for locals and visitors.
“The works reflect the SS Dicky wreck’s significance to the local area and include open green spaces, new public amenities and the highly anticipated skate park which the people of the Sunshine Coast helped design,” Cr Landsberg said.
“I’ve been checking on construction and it’s coming along really nicely, especially with clear sunny skies assisting with progress.
“From July and into August, works focus on completing the finishing touches to the new amenities building, construction of new boardwalks and retaining walls and landscaping, including new plants and trees.

“The skate park walls are taking shape and I can’t wait to see the ramps, rails, grind ledges, quarter pipes, stairs in use by the local skating community.
“I want to reiterate my thanks to the community for their patience while we deliver this fantastic community facility.”
Most of the Dicky Beach Park car park remains open to vehicles. Beach access points 266 and 267 are open to pedestrians, but may be intermittently closed for safety reasons associated with the nearby construction.

Construction hours are Monday to Friday, 6am–6pm. Occasional Saturday works will be required.
Expected completion remains on track for September, weather and site conditions permitting.
