Sunshine Coast SES volunteers are helping secure more than 100 properties after they were blasted by hail, strong winds and rain in a brief but savage storm.
The storm was one of many that swept through South East Queensland late Wednesday after originating in the Darling Downs.
Some areas escaped with just a few drops of rain, but others bore the brunt of nature’s fury.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) spokesperson told Sunshine Coast News that there had been 196 requests for assistance – and 115 of those were from the North Coast Region.
More than 5000 homes in the region lost power as lines came down, or were impacted.
Reports of damage came in from Maroochydore, Nambour, Palmwoods, Eudlo and Buderim.
Kmart at the Sunshine Plaza shopping centre at Maroochydore had to shut its doors after water began pouring through its ceiling.
Nambour SES volunteers attended 15 homes between 6pm and 1am to help secure them after hail damage and flooding.
Firefighters and Energex crews also rushed to help after trees fell on cars, homes and powerlines. No injuries were reported.
Teams are working their way through more than 100 call-outs to properties in the Maroochydore area.
The Bureau of Meteorology recorded rainfall up to 28mm around Cotton Tree while wind gusts of up to 57km/h were recorded at Sunshine Coast Airport shortly before 6pm.
The good news is the weather looks superb for the weekend with fine and sunny conditions and maximum temperatures between 21C and 23C.
