A new $9.5 million day hospital has opened, bringing specialist medical services closer to home for Noosa residents.

The Cura Noosa Day Hospital was launched within the Noosa Specialist Medical Centre at 36 Hofmann Drive in Noosaville last week.

Cura Day Hospitals Group CEO Peter Freeleagus said the opening of their 39th Australian hospital marked an important day for the company and the community.

“With nearly 30 per cent of Noosa’s population aged 65 or older, this hospital fills a genuine need, giving residents access to essential services such as ophthalmology and gastroenterology, including colonoscopy procedures, right here at home,” he said.

“We’re incredibly proud to officially open a hospital that has been purpose-designed from the ground up, built by local trades and suppliers, and staffed by clinicians who live locally and understand the needs of our community.”

The hospital spans a single level and features three operating theatres, seven first stage recovery beds and 10 second stage recovery recliner chairs, along with 130 open and undercover car parks, a patient drop-off zone and dedicated ambulance bays.

Once fully operational, the hospital will employ around 60 staff under the leadership of newly appointed CEO/director of nursing Stephanie Adams.

Ms Adams said many of the new staff members were locals returning to work in the region, including a number who already live locally but have previously had to travel outside the region to work in their chosen medical field.

“It’s great that we can keep this talent close to home, particularly as demand for our services will inevitably increase as the demographics of our community continues to age,” she said.

“We are totally committed to the long-term future of the hospital and we have plans to expand our clinical services offer over time.”

Coolum Beach based builder Integral Constructions and its local contractors and suppliers delivered the project on time and within budget.

Project manager Mike Dawson said the hospital was a credit to the team behind it.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved for Cura Hospitals Group and the Noosa community,” he said.

“I’m proud to say that every contractor engaged on this project was a local business, these are locals who are an important part of our community and it’s great to see that investment stay within our economy.”
