A man has been charged after a pedestrian was seriously injured in a crash.

Police were called to Sugar Bag Road at Caloundra West on Sunday at 3.30pm following reports that a male pedestrian had been struck by a silver Nissan Pathfinder, which then left the scene.

The 64-year-old was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with serious leg and chest injuries.

A 60-year-old Caloundra West man, who is alleged to have been the driver of the Nissan, was later arrested by police.

He has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm and driver fail to remain at incident and render assistance showing callous disregard.

He was bailed to appear in Caloundra Magistrates Court on September 17.
