A major upgrade is being made to a popular and rare seaside swimming pool on the Sunshine Coast.
Sunshine Coast Council is renewing the surface of the Kings Beach Ocean Pool at Caloundra.
The saltwater venue has been closed since late April and works are expected to continue until July.
The council issued a project update stating that the surface of the pool was being updated because it had “significantly deteriorated”.
“The upgrade will improve safety and user experience, reduce ongoing maintenance and repair costs, and ensure the pool is protected for many years to come.”
The upgrade consists of the pool being emptied, the existing surface removed and a new surface installed.
The pool is also known as the Sir Francis Nicklin Memorial Pool, named after the late Frank Nicklin, who lived on the Sunshine Coast and was Queensland premier from 1957 to 1968.
The pool, built in the late 1970s, is about 25m long and is generally open all year round from 4am to 9pm.
It is believed to be just one of a few ocean pools in Queensland, with others at Townsville and Wynnum.

The construction works, taking place on weekdays from 6.30am to 5.30pm, requires the use of machinery including hammer drills.
Councillor Terry Landsberg took to social media to remind locals and visitors of the works, and said the pool “is a favourite for families”.
“These works mean a smoother surface, clearer markings and a more reliable facility,” he said.
Respondents expressed their approval of the pool.
“Upgrade is much needed”, Jacqui Tomlins said.
“It’s been well maintained over the years, not like the ones in Sydney,” Jill McLaughlin said.
“Great asset to the community that all locals love and appreciate.”
“We love that Council is always making improvements for our beautiful Caloundra. Can the next improvement on the list be the water park next door to the outdoor pool? It needs a good clean,” Lin AR said.
