Teenager Connor Keogh is eager to start his quest to become a politician, after being included in the Queensland Youth Parliament.

The Matthew Flinders Anglican College Year 10 student is one of 90 people aged 15-25 who were selected to discuss the issues facing young people and develop legislation that they will debate later in the year.

It beckons as a learning experience and a stepping stone.

“I do hope to one day become a Member of Parliament,” he said.

“It’s a goal I’m actively striving toward and I thought that applying to Youth Parliament would help me learn more about how this kind of role works.”

Connor is the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament Member for Glass House, and is also a Member of the Committee for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships.

He met Member for Glass House Andrew Powell recently.

“Just like the previous Youth Members for Glass House Holly Baxter, Jack McSweeny and Ariana Doolan, Connor is intelligent, focused and keen to change the world,” Mr Powell said.

“But Connor has embarked on this adventure at an even younger age than previous Youth Members, which makes his passion for politics even more impressive.

“These types of opportunities are so important for our young people.  I love how it encourages them to get involved and learn more about government and how they can initiate change in the real world,” Mr Powell said.

“I plan on meeting with Connor throughout the year and he’s keen to shadow me around the electorate and in Parliament to get a firsthand experience of what it means to be an MP.”

“He may also pop up at the local show circuit, so come and say hello at my stall at the Maleny or Woodford Show.”

“Over the past few years, I’ve really appreciated being able to get a young person’s insight on issues that matter to them and look forward to continuing to have similar conversations with Connor.”
