The tear-down of a former Sunshine Coast Council chambers and administration building is under way, as it makes way for a new public precinct.
Work has started on the removal of the facility at 77 Bulcock Street, which will be replaced by a town square known as the Caloundra Community and Creative Hub.
The demolition is expected to take about four months, before work on the new space with its award-winning design begins next year.
Councillor Terry Landsberg detailed the changes.
âThis project marks an important step in opening up the heart of Caloundra and creating a more connected, people focused city centre,â he said.
âRemoving the former council chambers allows us to unlock this site and improve links between the Events Centre, Library+, the town square, Bulcock Street and the beachfront, supporting local businesses and encouraging more activity in the area.
âWhile there will be some short-term disruption, this carefully managed stage will pave the way for high quality public spaces with greenery, shade and safer pedestrian access that will benefit the community for years to come.â

Local contractor Hutchinson Builders is leading the demolition of the structure, which has held a prominent position at an intersection along Caloundraâs main street. The knockdown was scheduled to start on Monday, April 20.
âWorks will start with removing internal fixtures, fittings and materials, followed by carefully demolishing the building structure,â a council project update stated.
âDue to the known presence of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) used in the original construction of the building, a specialist independent hazardous materials consultant has been involved in preparing demolition documentation.
“They will oversee the safe removal and disposal of any ACMs in line with strict health and safety requirements.
âFollowing demolition of the building structure the site will be made safe and prepared for the next stage of the town square upgrade.â

There will be some impacts to traffic, including the closure of Otranto Avenue car park, and pedestrian controls.
A petition was submitted to Sunshine Coast Council, last year, appealing to relocate the Caloundra Visitor Information Centre, which has been based at the building.

Sunshine Coast News has approached the council for further comments regarding the building’s history, and visitor information centre.
Cr Landsberg shared news of the demolition of the building and subsequent construction of the town square on social media on April 17. He also said the trees there “will be staying”.
Locals shared their reactions.
“As a business owner Iâm loving what is happening: a hive of activity everywhere,” Marissa Austin said.
“A very good example of 60s architecture by Fred Scorer to be smashed to the ground. More brilliance from council,” David Dyer added.
