A Sunshine Coast family is mourning the loss of their beloved cat after it was attacked by two roaming dogs in its own backyard.
Family pet Taco died from his injuries following the attack at a Woombye home on January 4.
“Our beloved pet cat Taco was chased and savagely attacked by two roaming dogs while resting in our yard,” owner Cybil Wallis said.
“My husband Samuel was in the garden at the time and rushed Taco to the ER. The vets did everything possible to care for him but tragically he succumbed to his wounds the next morning.”
Ms Wallis said the loss had devastated the family, particularly their three-year-old son, Finley.
“We are beyond devastated as Taco was a cherished family member. My three-year-old son is absolutely in love with him and will not understand where his cat has gone,” she said.

“I am so grateful that he was not home at the time to have witnessed this – let alone what could’ve happened if he’d been in the yard at the same time.”

Following a letterbox drop in the neighbourhood, the family received information from residents about dogs matching the description roaming nearby streets on previous occasions, which has been passed on to Sunshine Coast Council.
“Council is aware of this incident and investigations are continuing,” a spokesperson said.

Ms Wallis said the family held no ill will towards the dogs involved but believed responsibility rested with their owners.
“Sam and I have each had both dogs and cats growing up and we love them,” she said.
“We hold the owners responsible for failing to contain their dogs on their property and now refusing to come forward and own up.
“We hope that council will be able to locate the owners and issue an infringement.”
She said the family expected the owners would help cover the substantial veterinary costs incurred while trying to save Taco’s life.
“He was such a special cat – more like a miniature lion or a tiny dragon,” Ms Wallis said.
“Fin was often in the backyard with Taco and the two would have little adventures following each other around.
“I don’t know what I’m going to say when our son asks where Taco is.”
Council urges residents to report dog attacks immediately by calling 5475 7272, which is available after hours and on weekends, and reminds dog owners of their responsibility to ensure pets are securely contained.
