The hinterland’s dining scene has a new addition, with hospitality veteran Stuart Derham opening The Local Montville, a relaxed eatery serving up pizza and homemade ice cream.

Mr Derham, who recently moved from regional Victoria, opened the doors earlier this month and says he’s been warmly welcomed by the community.

“The biggest feedback has been that people are excited to have something open at night,” he said.

“Montville has plenty of lovely cafes but it can go a bit quiet after dark, so it’s great to bring some energy back in the evenings.”

The new eatery occupies the site of the former iconic Shali’s Cafe, which had sat empty for about 18 months.

Mr Derham previously ran a restaurant called The Local in East Gippsland before making the move to the hinterland two months ago.

“I came from a really small population base to a much larger one, but I love that the Sunshine Coast still feels made up of little connected communities,” he said.

“That’s the beauty of the hinterland.”

Mr Derham said his intention for the The Local Montville was “simplicity” with an emphasis on quality local ingredients.

“The pizza bases and small-batch ice creams are all made from scratch by me,” he said.

“We are trying to source as many local things as possible – so far we have bananas for the ice cream from Hunchy and honey from Palmwoods, among other things.”

The premises occupies an iconic spot on Main Street.

The business, which operates seven days a week, is currently BYO (free of charge) with plans to add a liquor licence in the future.

Mr Derham employs a team of 12, all of whom are hinterland locals, and says the Montville community spirit has impressed him from day one.

“It’s been great seeing how businesses up here support each other,” he said.

“Everyone wants to see the range thrive. Most our customers have been locals as well.”

When he’s not in the kitchen, the new hinterland resident can often be spotted exploring the steep local hills on his bike.

“I thought I was good at hills until I came here,” he joked.

“Some of these roads are seriously steep – but I love that I don’t have to wear 17 layers when I head out early in the morning.”
