A candlelit vigil is being held tonight for a beloved Noosa Lions Football Club member who was fatally struck by lightning last Thursday.
Finley Bone was a much-loved member of the club’s Football Queensland Premier League 3 women’s team and coach to the Lions’ under-12/13 girls.
The fatal accident reportedly happened while Ms Bone was practising her goal kicking at the Cooroy Sporting Complex, home to the Cooroora United Football Club.
The Cooroy club, which is hosting tonight’s tribute, paid tribute to Ms Bone on social media.
“Finley was a much-loved and special part of our club and community,” it said.
“Her happy spirit, kind heart and infectious smile brightened every room she walked into. She brought so much joy to everyone who knew her and will always be fondly remembered.”
Close to 200 tributes have been posted to the Noosa Lions Facebook page since the tragic accident. The outpouring of grief for Ms Bone has been widespread, with comments coming from a heartbroken local community and people all around Australia and overseas.
Australia’s national women’s football team the Matildas paid tribute to the promising footballer, who was 21.
“Her dedication to the sport represented everything beautiful about the game and our thoughts are with everyone at the club. Finley will always be part of our football family,” they said.
The Brisbane Roar women’s side also held a moment of silence for Ms Bone before kick-off in their match against the Melbourne Victory on Saturday.
Locals remembered her fondly as a talented and beautiful soul who touched the lives of many.
“Finley will be remembered by her beautiful smile and fun energy. I watched her grow from a young girl to a beautiful young lady. Condolences to her family and all the lives she touched!” one tribute said.
Another posted: “We are so devastated and heartbroken with the immensely tragic loss of Finley. She was an amazing coach and role model for our girls. A beautiful soul. My deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. We love and miss you Fin.”
Noosa Christian College also paid tribute to its former student on social media.
“Noosa Christian College is devastated by the tragic loss of Finley Bone. Finley was a much-loved past student of the school. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Paul, Donna, and all of Finley’s family and friends,” it said.
The vigil is from 6.15pm at Cooroy Sporting Complex, 35 Mary River Road.
