A woman has sustained serious injuries after she fell into a fire pit on the Sunshine Coast.

The woman in her 70s suffered severe burns to her back and abdomen in the incident on a private property on Christmas Day.

The woman was treated on scene by Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics.

A Sunshine Coast LifeFlight helicopter was tasked to the area at 3.35pm and landed at a school oval.

Paramedics transported her to the helicopter, where she received further treatment from the LifeFlight critical care doctor and QAS flight paramedic.

The patient was then airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for further treatment.
