Lawn bowlers from around Australia are set to converge on the Sunshine Coast for a 14-day carnival, providing a boost to the region’s tourism industry.

More than 1300 competitors will take part in the Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival from July 6-19.

About $42,000 in prizemoney will be on the line across 12 tournaments, hosted by local clubs from the coast to the hinterland.

It’s open to bowlers of all levels, from seasoned professionals to enthusiastic amateurs who are eager to test their skills on first-class greens.

The feature event will be a clash between Australia and New Zealand at Coolum Beach Bowls Club on July 10 from 12.30pm. Australia won the title last year.

The influx of participants and their supporters is set to provide the region with an estimated $1.7 million boost via bowls clubs, accommodation providers, eateries, retail outlets and experience operators.

Hundreds of bowlers will test their skills against one another.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel said the carnival was timely.

“Major events bring visitors to the Sunshine Coast when we need them the most, and that is during our cooler months and outside of our peak periods,” he said.

“How fantastic that this year’s feature event at the Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival is an ‘over-the-ditch’ challenge between Australia and New Zealand.

“Not only is this healthy international rivalry at its best, but it also capitalises on the direct flights from Auckland during winter.

“I hear it’s going to be bigger and better this year with the Kiwis retuning to seek revenge.”

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said the carnival was a “great event” that attracted people during the off-peak tourism period.

“We find that participants visiting overseas often extend their trip beyond the event which further increases the economic impact of the event,” they said.

“Many local accommodation providers and retail businesses will benefit from the extended stay of bowlers arriving before the start of the carnival to contest other regional bowls events starting in late May and continuing through to mid-August.”

Tournaments will be played at venues around the region.

Carnival chairperson Graham Tanis said lawn bowls was a social sport as much as it was competitive.

“We look forward to witnessing remarkable displays of talent, sportsmanship and camaraderie throughout the tournament this year,” he said.

“We have planned a variety of divisions and categories to cater to every bowler’s preference. From singles and pairs to triples and fours, participants will have the chance to compete in their preferred format, ensuring an engaging and inclusive experience for all.”

Registration for the Winter Bowls Carnival is now open. As spaces are limited, early registration is strongly encouraged.

The carnival is supported by Sunshine Coast Council, Maroochy RSL and Visit Sunshine Coast.
