A key intersection close to a school on one of the Sunshine Coast’s most congested roads is set to be made safer.

Upgrades are on the way for the junction of Nicklin Way, Meridian Street and Beach Drive in Bokarina.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is undertaking detailed design work to improve safety for pedestrians.

Initial design work includes the removal of slip lanes and traffic islands, reconfigured pedestrian facilities and line marking.

This is expected to improve safety for school students as well as bike riders and those using mobility scooters and wheelchairs.

Federal and state government funding of $4.68 million has been allocated for the project as part of the 2023-25 Road Safety Program. It follows an announcement that upgrades are on the way to three other intersections along Nicklin Way.

Transport and Main Roads regional director North Coast region Scott Whitaker said the upgrades would make a significant difference.

“Road safety is our region’s top priority, and works to improve the Nicklin Way, Meridian Street and Beach Drive intersection will contribute to a safer journey to school for students, and improved accessibility and safety for other road users,” he said.

“Nicklin Way is a heavily trafficked urban arterial road that connects the coastal suburbs on the Sunshine Coast.

“These works at the intersection with Meridian Street and Beach Drive will provide a safe crossing for the community, in particular the vulnerable pedestrians who use the intersection.”
