The past week has seen some good fishing days, with the odd shower about. Unfortunately it looks like showers will set in from Thursday until early next week, so it’s going to be another wet weekend on the water.

There’s been some media coverage and concern in local Facebook fishing groups about the presence of ulcers on some fish caught recently in the Maroochy and Noosa rivers. The disease is a result of recent heavy rainfall falling on areas of acid sulphate soils that then release sulphuric acid into creeks and estuaries. If you catch fish with the disease, do not eat them.

Offshore: The weekend and into next week is looking promising for offshore fishos, with some good catches reported over the past week. Spanish Mackerel have been reported on the Barwon Banks and on the closer reefs. Sharks are continuing to be a problem, chasing the Mackerel on the closer reefs. We’ve also had reports of Amberjack and Kingfish out wide.

Maroochy River: Whiting continue to be caught in good numbers in the Maroochy River, with Chambers Island, Picnic Point and Cotton Tree the pick of the spots. Some nice-size Flathead have been caught around the Bli Bli stretch, along with Trevally and the odd Mangrove Jack in the mid to upper reaches. Reports of some nice Tailor catches around the mouth have also started coming in.

Noosa River: Catches of Bream, Trevally and Whiting continue to be reported. Some nice Flathead have also been caught from the mouth to the mid reaches. Diamond Trevally have started making an appearance, along with Jewfish, with some models creeping over 50cm. Much the same as last week, crabs continue to be reported in good numbers.

Caloundra: There’s been plenty of Pelagic action out the front of Caloundra, with some big Flathead getting around in the shallows. Some good crab catches have been reported in the passage, with both Mud and Sand Crabs on the move.

Beaches: Fishos have been rewarded this week with some nice catches of Jewfish and Snapper from Caloundra through to Kawana.
