The globe’s top body surfers are set to converge on the Sunshine Coast for the finals of the International Bodysurfing Association World Tour Finals next year.
The event is set to be held at Coolum Beach, on a date to be confirmed.
The IBSA shared the news on social media and said the location was “the perfect venue, due to its consistent and great waves”.
“(It is) ideal for showcasing the incredible talent of bodysurfers from around the globe,” it said.
“The Sunshine Coast is one of the most naturally beautiful stretches of coastline in all of Australia and the world.
“Get ready for epic waves and unforgettable moments as we bring the world’s best bodysurfers together in this stunning coastal paradise.”
The announcement followed the success of the annual Coolum Wedge festival.
Coolum Wedge co-founder Darren Verrenkamp said the growth and success of the event, now in its fourth year, was the cornerstone to being awarded the world tour finals.
“In just a few short years we’ve managed to grow this event into Australia’s premier competition attracting competitors from around the world, and we’re excited and proud that we’ve made such an impact in such a short time to secure this event from other high-profile international locations,” he said.
State Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie said it was a coup for the region.
“We already know we have some of the best surfing conditions in the world, and to play host to an international event attracting some of the world’s greatest bodysurfers and an international audience is better the best advertising campaign money can buy,” he said.
“The economic benefits alone from hundreds of competitors and their families will bolster local tourism operators, with flow-on effects to every other small business in the food chain.”
Mr Verrenkamp added: “This is largely thanks to the efforts of Dan and especially Bendigo Community Bank Marcoola who has been our anchor sponsor since inception, and shares the same community spirit as bodysurfing.”
Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien said the tour finals would help showcase the Sunshine Coast to the world.
“With the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games around the corner, this event will help demonstrate why the Sunshine Coast is fast becoming a sporting and tourism mecca,” he said.
This year’s Coolum Wedge, which is also a qualifier for next year’s finals, will be held from April 26 to 28.
The Wedge is known for its all-inclusive vibe, hosting additional divisions for ages from 10-85.
People of all abilities, from the casual bodysurfer to salty veterans, compete and cheer each other’s waves in the heats.
