Surfing and movie enthusiasts are set to get a taste of a new film festival at a special screening months in advance.
The community-driven Noosa International Surfilm Festival is set to be held in August, but audiences can enjoy a precursor with Birth of the Endless Summer at The J Theatre next month.
Film festival founder and director Jesca Maas said she was looking forward to the festival after she successfully ran the popular Yallingup Surfilm Festival in 2010 and 2012.
“The Yallingup event was regarded as one of the most highly successful surf film festival platforms of its time, so now it’s time to let Noosa locals and our many visitors enjoy these amazing films,” she said.
Ms Maas is supported by a small, dedicated committee of surf culture enthusiasts, who share a common vision to create an international event that will showcase the value of surf films within surf culture.
The screening of Birth of the Endless Summer will be held in collaboration with the long-running Noosa Festival of Surfing (March 8-17), when thousands of surfing enthusiasts will be in town.
Ms Maas said the film, to be shown on March 8, would pique interest ahead of the film festival on August 8-10.
“We are holding a special screening … so we can whet people’s appetite on the types of films we will be showing,” she said.
“This film is a new, full-length feature documentary detailing the genesis of what would become the most influential surf movie of all time.
“The award-winning documentary feature captures the magic of adventure traveler and surf pioneer Dick Metz as he vagabonds the globe from 1958 to 1961.
“Metz’s journey would not only inspire his friend Bruce Brown to create one of the most watched and beloved films of all time, but also set events in motion that would forever change surfing and pop culture.”
Short films KIN and Dancing on Water will also be on show.
