Police have charged a 26-year-old man with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, after he allegedly reached speeds of almost 200kmh on a motorcycle.

A Queensland Police Service media release said police were conducting speed enforcement on the Sunshine Motorway at Maroochydore on Wednesday when they allegedly observed the motorcycle travelling at high speed towards them.

Police allegedly recorded the motorbike’s speed at 197kmh and 182kmh, in a 100kmh zone.

Police intercepted the rider on the motorway and he was placed under arrest.

The Maroochydore man was charged and is scheduled to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 29.

Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho wants to remind motorcycle riders that they are among some of Queensland’s most vulnerable road users.

“Motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to be killed in a crash than people who are in a car,” he said.

“This rider was travelling at almost 200kmh. At that speed, a crash is almost guaranteed to be fatal.

“This was incredibly dangerous riding, not only for himself but for other road users.

Police charged the rider with speeding after pulling him over on the motorway.

“This man will now have to appear before a court and explain to a magistrate why he was putting himself and other road users at risk of serious injury or death.

“We’re reminding motorcyclists and all road users that we are all responsible for making our roads safer.”
