Improvements worth almost $200,000 have been made to a popular skate park in the hinterland.

Nine large sails, a bitumen car park and a water fountain were installed at the park in Palmwoods, just in time for the summer holidays.

Councillor Winston Johnston said shade was vital for park users.

“It’s fantastic to see the young talent trying out new tricks and turns on the concrete playscape while parents and spectators will soon enjoy the action from a shaded seating area,” he said.

“Skate parks are an integral part of keeping our community active and connected, and I hope new cooler shade will create a social hub for our youth and broader community to enjoy.”

The project was made possible with funding split 50:50 between council and the Heritage Palmwoods Community Branch, which is a joint venture between Heritage and the local community, represented by Palmwoods Community Branch Ltd.

As a community branch, PCB Ltd’s share of profits is distributed back into the area via community grants, sponsorships and more.

PCB Ltd director Audrey Lyttle said the community branch was delighted to contribute $99,000 towards the shade structure at the skate park.

“It’s very rewarding to see this project come to fruition for the benefit for the Palmwoods community,” she said.

Council funds and maintain 28 skate parks across the region.

The car park was upgraded from gravel to bitumen.
