A Sunshine Coast family is on a mission to build a dream accessible family home and set an example for inclusive living.
After struggling to find suitable housing, Dane and Stacey Cross, along with their three children, are on a mission to create an environment where everyone’s needs are met, regardless of abilities.
After owning and renovating two homes, the Crosses still battled to find a residence that could offer the level of accessibility and independence that Mr Cross needed, while maintaining the homeliness and functionality for a family of five.
Even the process of finding a rental property while they embarked on their new construction project proved near-impossible.
They found themselves living in a rental property that didn’t meet Mr Cross’ accessibility needs, making everyday activities like entering and exiting, even showering, a challenge.

After an extensive search for the perfect location, they settled on Yaroomba, where they envisioned their dream home.
Mr Cross, a leading disability advocate and access consultant, said they hoped to inspire people and families with special needs.
“Our journey has been about turning a dream into reality and leading the way for others,” he said.
“We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive.”
Working closely with their building designer, Pete Taylor and the team at Taylor’d Distinction, they have designed a home that meets their family’s unique needs but also sets new standards for accessible living.
Mr Taylor said it was a breakthrough initiative.
“Collaborating with the Cross family on this project has been an incredible experience,” he said.
“Their commitment to driving change in the field of accessible housing pushes the boundaries of design and innovation is inspirational.”
Jamie Bauer, from builder Jamie Bauer Constructions, also said it was an exciting idea.
“We are honoured to be a part of this remarkable journey,” he said.
“Building a home that merges accessibility, functionality and aesthetics is a challenge we wholeheartedly embrace.”
Ms Cross, also a passionate advocate and driver of change, highlighted the importance of their project in the community.
“This is about more than just a home,” she said.
“It’s about fostering a sense of belonging, independence and empowerment for Dane as a partner and parent to our children.”
“We aim to set an example that families where disability is involved is a normal part of life, and it’s a beautiful one.”
Mr Cross invited local suppliers and innovators to collaborate with them on this exceptional journey.
“As we embark on this journey, we are excited to work with local suppliers who share our vision for an inclusive world,” he said.
“We are particularly interested in showcasing innovative accessibility products, assistive technology, and smart home solutions that can transform lives.”
The Cross family members are passionate about promoting accessible tourism, and are featured in Tourism and Events Queensland’s current Year of Accessible Tourism campaign, as well as Visit Sunshine Coast’s Accessible Tourism page. Through their Cross Family Adventures social media platforms, they share their journey, trials and triumphs with the world, inspiring others to embrace diversity and celebrate life’s adventures.
They have stretched their family budget, working hard to achieve their dream, acknowledging that not all are in a position to do so.
Mr Cross is also the Sunshine Coast 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Committee deputy lead of infrastructure and is part of the Sunshine Coast Council Community Strategy Leadership Group.
