Repair work is about to start on a vital piece of infrastructure on a busy road.

The two-lane Bli Bli Bridge over the Maroochy River on David Low Way was built in 1959 and is an important link for the fast-growing community at Bli Bli and beyond.

In recent years, the road has seen increased traffic volumes and congestion as a result of the population expansion.

The planned maintenance works will take place under the bridge, also known as the David Low Bridge, to stabilise the existing bridge girders.

The repairs will start in early October and are expected to take about eight weeks, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The bridge will be closed to traffic travelling westbound towards Bli Bli for the safety of road workers and motorists.

An alternative route will be available via the Sunshine Motorway, Bradman Avenue and David Low Way.

Allowances will be made for morning and afternoon CDC school buses to continue operating as normal.

Transport and Main Roads will engage with nearby businesses before works start, to discuss managing possible impacts during this time.

TMR North Coast acting regional director Bonnie Johnstone said the bridge was an key link for the community and industry, as well as a significant landmark in the area.

“Safety is our top priority and TMR has a rigorous maintenance program, which includes regular inspections of the bridge,” she said.

“Bli Bli is a growing community with a bustling town centre and the bridge is a key connector to the Sunshine Motorway to the east and the suburbs of Nambour and Diddillibah to the west.

“These works will stabilise the existing components underneath the bridge ensuring ongoing safety for all bridge users, including people walking and riding bikes, and those on the water.

“The Queensland Government is delivering almost $3.1 billion worth of road and transport infrastructure projects across the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas over the next four years, including planning for future upgrades of Bli Bli Bridge.”
