Coast residents are being asked to dig deep for this year’s Red Shield Appeal, as “too many Queenslanders are struggling to make ends meet”.

The not-for-profit Salvos Maroochydore is calling for anyone who can to get involved in the annual fundraiser, with all money raised staying local to support community services and programs in the region.

The Salvos aim to raise $5.5 million throughout Queensland and $30,000 in Maroochydore to support those doing it tough.

People can get involved through community collection points, online fundraising or organising a collection at workplaces, schools or sporting events.

“If you have ever thought about volunteering, now is the time. Grab your friends, your workmates or make it a family outing or a group activity for your club,” Salvation Army Major Neil Clanfield said.

“Too many Australians are struggling to make ends meet and they need your support now more than ever.”

While all Australians are feeling the pinch of cost-of-living pressures, he said it was more extreme for those living below the poverty line.

“The Salvos are seeing more and more people skipping meals, going without prescribed medications and turning the lights off,” he said.

The Salvation Army is calling on everyone who can to get involved in its Red Shield Appeal.

“We don’t want anybody on the Sunshine Coast to be left alone during these tough times. But we can get through it together, with your support.

“There are several volunteer opportunities available throughout the month – any time you can give is greatly appreciated. Get in touch with your local Salvos by visiting salvationarmy.org.au.

“Maroochydore is known for being a generous and supportive community – and we know this year will be no different.”

Now in its 59th year, the annual Red Shield Appeal funds vital programs, including financial assistance, homelessness, family and domestic violence, and drug and alcohol services.

Each year, through the Salvation Army’s nationwide network of services, the Salvos provide more than a million bed nights of accommodation, and more than 1.52 million meals to those in need.

“The Salvos cannot do what we do without the generosity of Queenslanders. If you have the means, please consider donating to the Red Shield Appeal or becoming a volunteer. Your support will help us to leave no one in need,” Mr Clanfield said.

To donate or volunteer for the Red Shield Appeal, or if you need support from the Salvos, visit salvationarmy.org.au or call 13 SALVOS. You can also donate at any Salvos Store.
