A busy junction is set for an overhaul aimed at improving safety, easing congestion and addressing community concerns.
Planning is complete for the Landsborough-Maleny Road and Maleny-Montville Road Intersection Upgrade at Balmoral Ridge.
It is one of the main connections in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, carrying more than 7500 vehicles per day.
A single-lane roundabout has been identified as the preferred option to improve safety, reduce congestion and enhance connectivity for all road users.
Design is now underway as part of the state government’s $7 million election commitment to upgrade the intersection.
A Transport and Main Roads media community alert stated that the improvements would have significant benefits, and should help alleviate locals’ safety concerns.
“The Queensland Government is progressing plans to upgrade the Landsborough-Maleny Road and Maleny-Montville Road intersection in Maleny,” it stated.
“The safety upgrade aims to improve safety, efficiency, and capacity for all road users.
“The roundabout design will address key concerns raised by the community, including improving visibility to the east of the intersection, and reducing peak-hour congestion.
“The intersection upgrade shows a commitment to addressing community concerns and improving road safety in the region.
“The Queensland Government will continue to work closely with the community to ensure this upgrade delivers the best outcomes for Maleny and surrounding areas.”

It is a key turning point on the Blackall Range Tourist Drive (Tourist Drive 23).
It currently consists of a stop sign for vehicles turning from Maleny Montville Road on to Landsborough Maleny Road and left and right turn lanes for vehicles turning from Landsborough Maleny Road on to Maleny Montville Road.
It is within 1km of tourism attraction Maleny Cheese, multiple accommodation options, a cafe and church.
A TMR spokesperson said “further details will be shared as the project progresses”.
