When people think about financial advice, one of the first questions is often about cost.

It is a fair question. Financial advice is an investment and people naturally want to understand the value they receive in return.

Many assume that value comes from investment recommendations, portfolio management and market insights. While technical expertise, strategic thinking and staying across constantly changing legislation are fundamental parts of the role, they are not the only part.

Life rarely unfolds exactly as planned. Retirement, inheritances, selling a business, relationship breakdowns, caring for ageing parents and unexpected health issues can all bring financial decisions that feel overwhelming.

At times like these, people need more than calculations and spreadsheets. They need clarity, perspective and confidence.

A good adviser can help navigate complex issues such as capital gains tax, superannuation strategies, estate planning and legislative changes. Equally important is providing accountability, support and a trusted sounding board in difficult decisions.

In my 27 years as a financial adviser, I have seen people lose sleep, delay important decisions and make costly mistakes during some of the most challenging periods of their lives.

Good financial advice is about helping people make informed decisions, avoid costly mistakes and move forward with confidence when life becomes complicated.
