A hinterland town’s CCTV network is set for an upgrade, with existing cameras to be replaced as part of a $141,000 project.
The Cooroy initiative has received $70,664 in state government funding through Round 2 of the Secure Communities Partnership Program, with the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Noosa Shire Council jointly funding the remaining capital cost.
Delivered in partnership with the Queensland Police Service (QPS), the project will replace the town’s 10-year-old CCTV technology with a modern system designed to provide clearer and more reliable coverage across key areas of Cooroy.
Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt said the investment would deliver a practical improvement to community safety and support businesses in Cooroy town centre.
“Cooroy is a proud and vibrant community, and people should feel safe when they are visiting the town centre, running a business or going about their daily lives,” Mr Hunt said.
“This project will replace the existing CCTV network, which I understand has experienced regular outages due to the age and condition of the current technology.
“Reliable CCTV is an important tool in supporting community safety. The upgraded cameras will provide clearer coverage, help deter criminal activity and provide valuable evidence to Queensland Police when incidents occur.
“It’s great to see Noosa Council successfully applying for state government funding for a project that will have a direct and practical benefit for the Cooroy community.
“This is a strong example of the State Government, local council, the business community and Queensland Police working together to deliver an outcome that will support businesses, residents and visitors.”
Noosa Shire Mayor Frank Wilkie said the project demonstrated the value of collaboration between council, state government, local businesses and police.
“This project is a great example of what can be achieved when local partners work together to deliver practical improvements for the community,” he said.

For the past 10 years, the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has installed, managed and maintained the town’s CCTV network in partnership with local businesses, Queensland Police and community stakeholders, supporting community safety and business security.
Chamber vice president Roy Vanderberg said the funding demonstrated the state government and council’s commitment to supporting regional communities and ensuring country towns remain safe, vibrant places to live, work and visit.
“The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has long recognised the importance of maintaining a safe and prosperous town centre,” Mr Vanderberg said.
“This funding is an investment in the future of Cooroy. The upgraded system will also provide valuable evidence when incidents occur, assisting police investigations and helping to identify offenders.”
Footage from the new technology will be relayed to Cooroy Police Station for monitoring by agreement and consistent with current arrangements.
Noosa Council will now begin project planning, including engagement with the Cooroy business community and QPS to define and implement a high-quality system supported by appropriate procedures and operating protocols.
