Sunshine Coast Council has gone back to the drawing board to improve an increasingly busy road after previous attempts encountered difficulties.
The 2.6km Camp Flat Road is a key connector between Bli Bli Road and Yandina Bli Bli Road, and is a gateway to the bustling Parklakes estates.
Councillor Maria Suarez took to social media, in late May, to let locals know that staff were working on a new proposal to upgrade it.
“It’s being redesigned again: for the third time,” she said.
“First time around, too many land acquisitions were required, second time around had some roundabouts in the design that blew out the budget, so they’re redesigning it again.
“I’m looking forward to having that final design out to the community fairly soon.”
A council spokesperson told Sunshine Coast News that new options were being explored to improve safety and traffic flow along the corridor.
“Sunshine Coast Council is working to make local roads safer and easier for everyone to use.”
“We are progressing investigations into viable safety improvements to Camp Flat Road including its intersection with Whitecross Road in Bli Bli.”
The spokesperson said increased expenses had necessitated a new approach to the project.
“Due to rising construction costs and site constraints, earlier roundabout concepts are no longer achievable for the foreseeable future.”
“We have reviewed these plans and we’re now considering additional options that can be delivered sooner and provide strong safety outcomes for our community.
“Our focus remains the same: improving safety at and around the intersections and along Camp Flat Road corridor, supporting smoother traffic flow, and making the area safer for motorists.”
The spokesperson revealed a proposed timeline.
“We remain committed to delivering a solution that will have the most impact for the community and that can start construction next financial year.”
“Design options are expected to be finalised in July 2026. Construction is planned to start in early 2027 and continue into the 2027–28 financial year.”
The spokesperson acknowledged the community’s interest in the long-awaited upgrade.
“We understand the importance of this road to the local community and value community feedback. “
“We have informed residents of the Camp Flat Road corridor improvement works and will continue to keep our community informed as the project progresses.
“This project is an important step in improving safety along the Camp Flat Road corridor.”

More than $3.46 million of council and state government funding was recently allocated towards stage 4 of the Camp Flat Road upgrade.
Stage 4 works were previously expected to deliver a range of enhancements at the Whitecross Road intersection including road widening and dedicated turning lanes, a new roundabout to improve traffic flow, upgraded road lighting and stormwater drainage, bicycle lanes and a pedestrian footpath, and construction of three retaining walls to support the new road design.
Stage 5 was completed in 2021, covering the 300m section between 109 and 145 Camp Flat Road.
Future stages (1 to 3) are planned and will focus on the Francis Road intersection, the 450m link between Francis Road and Whitecross Road and the 550m southern connection to Bli Bli Road.
