Rising demand for family law support across the Sunshine Coast is driving expansion among local firms as more individuals seek guidance through separation, parenting arrangements and major life transitions.

Bli Bli-based firm Thompson Legal has responded to this growing need with the launch of a dedicated family law department, marking a significant milestone in the firm’s continued growth just two years after opening.

For many, accessing early legal advice remains one of the biggest barriers to leaving difficult or uncertain situations.

Director Richard Thompson said the expansion reflected both community need and the firm’s long-term vision of supporting clients through all stages of life.

“We’re seeing more people facing significant personal change and they need clear, practical support to navigate it,” he said.

“Family law is a natural extension of what we do, supporting people through some of the most important and difficult transitions in their lives.”

The new department is led by senior associate Alicia Lucas, who brings extensive experience in family law, including running her own private practice.

Ms Lucas offers a deeply personal perspective to her work, shaped by her experience growing up in a large, blended family.

“I like to say I’m a poster child for why people should separate,” she said.

Ms Lucas added that her experience gave her a unique perspective on the realities families face.

“My parents stayed together long past when they should have, thinking it was best for us kids,” she said.

That experience has informed her approach to family law, particularly her focus on early intervention and helping clients make informed decisions before situations escalate.

“Early advice can reduce conflict, cost and stress, and gives people clarity about what comes next.”

Ms Lucas said many relationship breakdowns stem from issues that are left unaddressed.

“A lot of it comes down to communication, or a lack of it,” she said.

“If those conversations happen earlier, many situations don’t escalate to the point where legal intervention is needed.”

Thompson Legal is currently the only law firm in Bli Bli. Its expansion improves access to legal services for the growing local community, reducing the need for residents to travel outside the area for family law support.

To reduce barriers for those considering seeking advice, the firm is offering free initial consultations for family law matters.

“Knowing where to turn to, and having a team that genuinely cares, can make a meaningful difference to both the process and the outcome,” the firm stated.

The expansion reflects a broader shift toward accessible, community-based legal services across the Sunshine Coast.

“This is about meeting the evolving needs of the Sunshine Coast community, now and into the future.”
